Youth Work Training

Youth Work Skills Programme

Who is it for?

Youth Feds’ Youth Work Skills programme is for anyone working in the Voluntary Sector with children and young people. As mentioned in the title, the programme is about developing individual’s youth work skills, therefore those fresh to a youth work setting, volunteers, senior helpers (19+) and newly appointed paid youth workers are welcome to enrol on to the programme.

What is it about?

The course is made up of a number of themed areas. These are:

  • Induction to Course - An informal evening to meet and get to know one another. Also an opportunity to look at what you want to achieve from the programme
  • Introduction to Youth Work – what’s it all about?
  • Youth Participation – what is youth participation & consultation? How can you find out what young people actually think? The session breaks this down into bite sized chunks and gives you tools to use with your groups.
  • Volunteer Rights, Roles & Responsibilities – gives participants an opportunity to explore the role of volunteers within a youth work setting
  • Equality and Diversity- Why is it important in youth work? We are all stereotyped because of some of our personal characteristics and all hold prejudices. This session explores these prejudices and how we can overcome them before stereotypes become discriminatory.
  • Funding and Finance - Managing the money you generate is often one of the biggest headaches for any organisation.  This course will help you plan and implement a funding strategy
  • Child Protection - this course is available as an accredited course via the NSPCC.
  • Governance - this session covers what the main legal issues are for groups that work within the voluntary sector.
  • First Aid – The course covers treating an unconscious casualty, sprains strains, dislocations, fractures, burns, bleeds, the contents of a first aid kit and any other subjects you would like to cover. This session is also accredited.
  • Health and Safety - A two week course looking at what is health and safety. The course will cover current Legislation, what you need to be aware of and how to implement Heath and Safety in your organisation as part everyday practices. This is also accredited.
  • Every Child Matters
  • Anti-Bullying
  • Online-safety
  • Personal Safety
  • Dealing with Aggressive behaviour
  • Programme Planning
  • Food Hygiene

How long will it take?

The course is designed around participants need, this generally creates a course lasting between 10 – 15 weeks with one session a week. Youth Fed understand that accessing training at a time and place that works for everyone can be a problem – therefore we endeavour to roll out the programmes in an accessible building at a time that is right for everyone, this is generally an early evening.

How much does it cost?

Nothing! The training is free to Voluntary Sector groups and organisations. The course is funded by a number of organisations, we would like to take this opportunity to thank Cheshire County Council, Big Lottery, Connexions Cheshire & Warrington and NYA for their ongoing commitment.
