Volunteering Case Study- Keira Griffiths

Volunteering Opportunity: Buddy Scheme

I was inspired to take part in volunteering for the buddy scheme as I though it would be a great experience for wanting to be a teacher. I also thought that it seemed a lot of fun and I wanted to help disabled young people to do things that they cannot do by themselves. I thought it was a great opportunity to be able to provide friendship and to be a positive role model.

What I enjoyed most about the scheme was getting to meet and work alongside different people. I was able to see things from other peoples’ perspectives. It was also a great break from studying, especially whilst doing my GCSEs

I feel that volunteering in this opportunity has definitely helped me with my job prospects. I have been able to work with lots of children and young people which has provided great experience for wanting to be a teacher. I think that the experiences that I have had will put me above other people when I apply for university.

From volunteering for this project I feel more confident with working with young people. Before working with disabled children and young people, I was scared about disability, but I am not now. I also feel that the opportunity has enabled me to be more creative in my work.

During my volunteering with the West Cheshire Buddy Scheme I have volunteered in a variety of things. I befriended a boy who had a visual impairment and we took part in different social activities together. I supported staff at ‘The Buzz’ youth group and also worked with the staff at the Bowling Club. I supported the young people to have a good time at these activities.

I will continue to be involved in the project. The youth group is about to start running again after a break. I am also going to be befriending a new young person next month.

I think that the project has had a positive impact on the community. It has enabled disabled young people to access fun activities and has helped volunteers to get together and make new friends.
