Job Summary
Working as part of the Youth Fed Delivery team, the Team Leader will play an integral part in delivering the National Citizen Service (NCS) this summer in one of a variety of areas, in Cheshire West (Chester, Ellesmere Port, Northwich or Winsford) and/or Cheshire East (Macclesfield, Nantwich or Wilmslow).

As a role model and mentor, you will lead a team of 15 young people aged 15-17 over a four-week period including two residential weeks. Together with your Support Worker you will engage, challenge and inspire your team; supporting each individual on their NCS journey from start to finish ensuring they reach their full potential and have a memorable and life changing experience.

This is a challenging but rewarding role which at time requires long hours, overnight stays and participation in a night shift rota when on residentials. There are various start dates across our areas but all programs follow the same structure and run Monday to Friday.

Duties and Responsibilities
The list of responsibilities is a guide and may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide pastoral care for a team of 15 young people, overseeing the health, safety, and wellbeing of the group at all times across the entirety of the programme
  • Ensure the engagement and participation of all young people
  • Empower each individual young person to develop a range of new skills, encourage them to reflect upon their own progress and development
  • Support the team as they design and deliver a successful and meaningful social action project
  • Ensure that the Equal Opportunities, Health & Safety and Safeguarding policies are implemented and kept under review
  • You may be required to undertake such other duties commensurate with the post as and when required

Week 1 – Residential (4 nights, 5 days) at an outward-bound centre

  • Oversee young people during activities, mealtimes and downtime.
  • Be enthusiastic and participate in a range of outdoor activities.
  • Lead activities and sessions which are not led by centre staff.
  • Facilitate daily ‘Guided Reflection’ sessions.

Week 2 – Residential (4 nights, 5 days) in a uni-style environment

  • Follow structured timetable and lead your group during activities
  • Oversee young people during activities, mealtimes and downtime.
  • Lead activities and sessions which are not led by external providers.
  • Assist young people to cook meals when required.
  • Facilitate daily ‘Guided Reflection’ sessions.

Week 3 and 4 – Non-residential

  • Meet with your team every day at the location specified.
  • Support your team in developing a 30-hour social action project plan.
  • Facilitate young people to take the lead on the project delivery whilst monitoring its feasibility and advising adjustments where necessary.
  • Support your group with the delivery of their project.
  • Provide supervision at events and activities.

You have a legal duty that gives you responsibility, so far as is reasonably practicable, to ensure that you do not endanger yourself or anyone else by your acts or omissions. In addition, you must cooperate with the charity on health and safety matters and must not interfere or misuse anything provided for health, safety and welfare purposes.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Experience of leading a team
  • Experience of working with young people in a paid or voluntary capacity
  • The ability to manage and motivate a group of young people through a range of activities
  • Experience of working in a fast-paced environment and the ability to make decisions under pressure
  • Experience of planning, delivering and evaluating activities
  • Ability to handle sensitive information in a professional manner, in line with our policies
  • A flexible approach to work and the ability to adapt working style to different environments and teams

Beneficial:

Training
Mandatory training must be completed prior to your start date. The training will be a mix of face to face training and e-learning which will be organised and delivered by Youth Fed.

DBS
All candidates are required to return a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate. Youth Fed will assist with, and pay for your DBS application if you don’t currently hold a transferable certificate. We will provide more information on DBS certificates should you be offered a role.

References
We require two satisfactory references to ascertain your suitability to work on the programme. Both of your references must be from someone who knows you in a professional or academic context.

Work dates
Team Leaders work across the entirety of the 4-week programme with their team from start to finish. The sub areas are where you will be based for weeks 3 and 4 of the programme. There are several different programmes running at different times and in different locations. You can sign up to 2 programmes if you wish, so long as they don’t overlap.
